On doing
Tonight at the gym I was feeling great - I put 205 pounds over my head without too much trouble on a BTN press and cranked out a couple of muscle-ups, which I’ve only been nailing down recently.
A guy at the gym someone asked me what exercises I was doing to work up to the muscle-up; if you’ve ever asked me what my pull-up routine it’s basically this: get on the bar, and pull up. Switch grips, hop around, go for power, go for height, and pull. When you’re sick of this, go pull some more until you’re bored and then go home and eat and sleep.
I had mentioned that I watched a few videos over the weekend on technique and he said that he wanted me to teach him how to do one - so I said get on the bar and pull. He pulled hard, got his chest up to the bar and got stuck. He tried a few more times and eventually gave up. He said that he’d “better go watch some more Youtube” until he got the technique down pat.
Seriously?! Watching videos until you get a lift? The greats of this world (in anything) didn’t get awesome by reading books and watching videos until they were too tired to do anything but sleep. They busted their asses and went and did whatever it was that they wanted to get better at. When they plateaued or had a shitty day they pushed through and worked harder.
Enough sucking. At anything. Avoid bullshit, and go be awesome. Conventional wisdom only ever brought anyone conventional results. Try something new, have fun at it, and stop thinking so much.
Now get off your computer and go pick up something heavy.
